Bacteria Collections Lab
Material: q-tip, pen, petri dish, microscope, crystal violet, iodine, dh2o, ethanol, safrinin, inoculating loop
Method: swab a surface with a q-tip and put it in a petri dish then store in the incubator to grow bacteria. Put bacteria on to a slide and study its shape under a microscope. After studying the bacteria you have to gram stain each of the 4 bacteria, then study it again under the microscope.
Analysis: Bacteria A- school door, Bacteria B- bathroom door, Bacteria C- Vending Machine Bacteria D- pop can

Conclusion: In this lab, i found out how diverse bacteria can be. There are so many different sizes, colors, textures, and shapes of bacteria out there! Most of the bacteria was gram positive and the ones that showed some gram negative coloring still had gram positive coloring as well. Leaving the stain on the bacteria for too long can cause issues, like turning it black. Finding a more accurate time to leave the stain on for would help to fix that problem.

Wanted: H5N1
H5N1, also known as the Bird Flu or Avian Flu has caused serious outbreaks in domestic poultry in parts of Asia and the Middle East. Although H5N1 does not usually infect humans, nearly 650 cases of human cases of H5N1 have been reported from 15 countries since 2003.Most human cases of “highly pathogenic“ H5N1 virus infection have occurred in people who had recent contact with sick or dead poultry that were infected with H5N1 viruses. About 60% of people infected with the virus died from their illness.
Most people think that they will not get this virus, but since this sinister villain is so sneaky and pathogenic, you could fall subject to this virus, resulting in serious illness and in some cases, death. Staying away from poultry, especially the dead ones, is the most effective way of trying to keep yourself clean of H5N1. Also washing your hands lots and making sure you try to keep up a good immune system is always a good thing. Even if you haven't come in contact with poultry, someone else could and then spread it to you.
